While our previous favorite local beach was getting renovated, me and my three babes explored a bunch of other sandy day getaways. Check out our take on them, and my tips, tricks, and gear for a great beach day in the Washington DC region. In the summer of 2023, seven year old Perry will give his take on some of the places he will get to revisit during camp.

Chapel Point State Park

I found this particular beach on a map on the way to Colonial Beach and decided to check it out. The google reviews are pretty accurate, with the bottom line being it is peaceful and quiet, but soooo much trash. So much trash that if we had the time and supplies we would have spent a good amount of time just picking it all up.

When you get into the park, which is free btw, make a right to go to the beach. Eventually you will get to an unmarked area to park. Here is where the whole trash on the beach thing gets depressing. In front of the sign about the park were several trash cans. So people that come here just don’t seem to care, and at the end of the story it gets a bit weird, or creepy. I know, I’m not selling it.

Can see some of the scattered trash

It is a short walk to get to the water and the beach, which is really quite serene. We were the only ones there (nice chat with a bird watcher who was leaving when we arrived) and the between the beach, the peaceful water, and the trees on the other side of the river, it has sooooo much potential. I wanted to love this place. If I had focused my attention on that, I would be a regular. But it is hard not to notice, and there is the matter of….

As we were walking back, there was another person there. Some guy had pulled his jeep down to near the water (cars that are bringing boats can go down there) and had just thrown something in the water. He quickly got back in the car and jetted off. I have no idea what he threw in the water but it made a big PLOP and rings in the water that were quite large. But I really don’t understand what he could have been throwing in there. If you wanted to get rid of your trash, why not just leave it in the many bins at the sign?

To the basics though, the beach is kind of small, quite narrow, but has great views. Only portapotties available for facilities. Soft sand plus rocks/shells. It’s a river beach so water is shallow.

Plenty of rocks to throw in the water

Will I be back? Probably not. I heard from the birder that they clean it up in July? Maybe then?
