While our previous favorite local beach was getting renovated, me and my three babes explored a bunch of other sandy day getaways. Check out our take on them, and my tips, tricks, and gear for a great beach day in the Washington DC region. In the summer of 2023, seven year old Perry will give his take on some of the places he will get to revisit during camp.

Rocky Point Beach & Park

What a lovely summer morning at a local sandy beach! Just under one hour from home and outside of Baltimore is Rocky Point Beach & Park. Fearing it getting to max capacity we arrived at 1030 and had no problem and tons of space. Much of the people there were using the many picnic tables or playing in the water. There is a fee to get in and I couldn’t use my state park pass, but it wasn’t terrible- about $19 for two adults, and the kids were free. Once you get into the park, park in the small lot by the two tan buildings.

This way to the beach!

There’s a playground on the parking side of the lot. To get to the beach just head for the tan buildings and you pass between the buildings to get to the beach. It is a very quick walk from parking to the sand.

Look at all this space!

It’s not a large beach but pretty much has everything needed for a beach outing. Great patch of soft sand, with only a bit of rocky/shelly area when you first enter the water. The bay water was typical– shallow, lukewarm, and impossible to see the bottom. It always seem gross when you first walk in, but then you keep walking and it feels like a soft bath.

What we liked:

  • The view is lovely. Just calm water and trees
  • Soft sand and clean!
  • Large restrooms right behind the beach, with open shower area and large open changing area (noting open because there is no way to have privacy taking a shower or changing, but we were the only ones using it at the time)
Restroom, shower, changing facilities right behind the sand
  • Lukewarm bath water that didn’t seem to have jellyfish
  • Quick walk from parking to the beach
  • Lots of shaded picnic tables, a few grills as well. I think some need to be reserved
Beyond the sand there are picnic tables, grills, and the sailing launch area
  • Playground, volleyball, and some other amenities
  • Didn’t use it but there’s a sailing club or something there. I’m guessing there is a way to launch or rent small boats
  • Shower outside the restrooms as well to rinse off.

Not a fan of:

  • It’s a small beach. While not crowded, I could imagine that coming early afternoon on a busy summer weekend might be hard to get in.
Pic taken more than halfway down the beach
  • Don’t love having to pay of course
  • Bring your own food. And there’s no obvious place nearby to stop to pick up food

Concluding thoughts…

Judging by the pros/cons, it’s a pretty clear winner for a local beach excursion. It is no frills and maybe not our absolute favorite, but I know this will not be the last time we visit.
