While our previous favorite local beach was getting renovated, me and my three babes explored a bunch of other sandy day getaways. Check out our take on them, and my tips, tricks, and gear for a great beach day in the Washington DC region. In the summer of 2023, seven year old Perry will give his take on some of the places he will get to revisit during camp.

Kentmorr Beach Rules

Less than an hour drive took me and my little lady to The Kentmorr Beach Bar & Grill south on Kent Island. We were able to snag one of the few outdoor tables left for lunch and followed up with hanging out on the sand and taking in the bay.

We were happy with our food, though I longed for an iced coffee, my frozen watermelon red bull and some kind of alcohol drink hit the spot. The crabcake on my salad was outstanding and Lucy’s kid’s mac and cheese was not boxed mac, and her fries were pretty good too. Check check! Splashed with a nice view of the bay and the boats going in and out of the marina. Felt lots of Maryland pride with the state flag everywhere, relaying to Lucy that I had no idea what my ‘native’ New Jersey flag looks like. I could have done with something besides the country music, but it was pretty upbeat.

After lunch on the deck area, we headed to the sandy beach bar and bayfront where Lucy enjoyed playing in the mostly soft, but very hot sand. No swimming or going in the water allowed but we were able to cool our feet in the water. The view is fair, typical bay view but not thrilled with the large tanker ships in the distance. The beach bar and outdoor area was about at 75% capacity so plenty of people but did not feel crowded. After a bit, there was some live music going on too. Next time, I would get there right when they open to get an outdoor table on the sand and park ourselves there for a couple of hours.

I don’t think this is the kind of place you can spend the entire day, and I doubt you can bring a beach umbrella. It’s not that big, but big enough for a bay beach.

What we liked…

  • Lunch, sand, and view! Kind of a trifecta of perfect for a couple of hours
  • Beach bar vibes
  • No entrance fee though you have to pay for food/drinks
  • You can get a table or there are seats also right on the beach

Not a fan of…

  • The sand was hot. The day was hot but it’s not even summer yet. I would probably prefer to come on a cloudy day.
  • No swimming allowed. The hot sand probably would have been fine if we could dip in the water.

Concluding thoughts

I definitely want to come back here, and bring the guys. It’s such an easy quick escape to have lunch and some sand time. A change of scenery from the suburbs.
